Betsy Devos – on topic article

Betsy DeVos is the education secretary of Donald Trump who met with gay and transgender representatives at the Department of Education, to privately oppose the bathroom ban on transgender students. While she hadn’t publicly denounced the move, she is still a strong proponent of many charter schools and their vouchers. As a political fighter, she is certainly no pushover, arguing over the transgender bathroom issue against Attorney General, Jeff Sessions. Learn more: http://www.betsydevos.com/

Ms. DeVos sat down with the Trump administration during the enactment of the New Title IX policies. A former chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party, she upholds a courteous demeanor even when confronting political setbacks. Betsy DeVos has no fear of her opponents including lawmakers who presented a roadblock to her objectives. She has a huge family inheritance to back her up.

Ms. Devos is the co-operator of her father’s auto parts company. Her husband, Dick Devos, had connections to Amway, another billion dollar business. Ms. DeVos started her career in Washington without any inside knowledge of the government branches. But she managed to take over the public education sector anyway. Given her upbringing, she does seem out of place among public schools and colleges.

Betsy DeVos has pushed for vouchers that pay tuition at private schools, giving poor families more options to attend the school they want. However, she fought to cut funding for public and charter schools since they were run by private interests. This had the effect of undermining performance standards from K-12 education. Furthermore, she actively supports for-profit schools and prevented them from setting academic standards, essentially turning public education in Detroit into a free market.

Due to the lower standards in charter schools, Detroit has an excess supply of them but no one willing to enroll. She fought against legislation to close down failing charter schools and insisted that teachers should be the ones to take initiative in planning their curriculums. It has been reported that the DeVos has made several huge donations totaling $139 million towards charities. In the name of philanthropy, they prioritize education reform.

Ms. DeVos once claimed that our current system is failing to produce educated students with an equal opportunity to achieve the American Dream. However, her critics believe the DeVos’ funding efforts are simply a distraction from their campaign donations to the Federal government to fuel a political agenda. And yet, the DeVos supported the West Michigan Aviation Academy, the University of Maryland, and the Spectrum Health Foundation, to emphasize the value of a STEM education, the arts, and children’s health.

Recently, Ms. DeVos visited an all-girls charter school in Washington, praising it as a shining example of parents being empowered to choose the best education for their children. She flew over to Florida to endorse Christian schools and higher education institutions. She has gone as far as to make an appearance with the rapper Pitbull, who opened his own charter school named SLAM, to teach sports leadership. Ms. DeVos is determined to allocate funding in favor of for-profit schools over traditional public schools.

Cassio Audi- Always Marching to His Own Beat

Cassio Audi is the drummer of Brazilian Heavy Metal Band Viper. When the band formed in 1985, it is doubtful that any of the members could have foreseen the success they would go on to enjoy. At the time, they were just friends doing what they loved.

Heavy metal was relatively new to the Brazilian culture but the group quickly drew in crowds at their performances. Audi’s enjoyment and skill were easily seen by the audience and his ability to improvise and match the bands energy helped form a solid rhythmic base for the rest of the group.

Viper’s 1987 debut album, “Soldiers of Sunrise” became a major force in the Brazilian music industry. Cassio Audi was the drummer on this album and continued with the band until 1989, at which point he returned to college to focus on his education. After graduation, he went on the have a highly successful career in the financial industry. His prowess for percussion can also be heard on Viper singles “Projecto SP Metal” and “The Killero Sword”, both released in 1985.

Audi has credited British band Iron Maiden among his chief influences, along with other UK metal from the 1970’s and early 1980’s. His performance style was expressive yet understated at times to allow for other members of Viper to shine. The group found cohesion in spotlighting different band members alternating throughout their performances.

Viper continued throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s as the heavy metal scene in Latin America continued to grow without Audi behind the drums. However in recent years select crowds have delighted to see a familiar face artfully waving drumsticks to establish the beat.
